    He received the promise through the righteousness of faith. The promise was made to Abraham long before the law. To carry this further, the ultimate promise was that of the Messiah.

    Many hold that believing Gentiles, being the wild olive branches, are grafted into Israel, being the olive tree. Based on that premise, they also hold that believing Gentiles are joined to Israel on the basis of their faith and are therefore inward Jews; and extrapolated to the church, the church is Israel inwardly, the New Israel, etc. Gentiles who were historically separate from the covenants of promise were made near to Christ and the promises attendant to that new status. However, (sticking to what’s germane to the topic of this discussion) that says nothing about their being made citizens of national Israel.
